About Ruth
During my undergraduate years at the University of British Columbia in Canada, I majored in Psychology. Upon completing my first degree, I began teaching Psychology, Biology, and English to high school students, enjoying the satisfaction and joy of teaching and understanding how students can learn best. This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Applied Psychology, specializing in Youths and Learning, here in Hong Kong. Over the past ten years, I have worked closely with a diverse range of students, helping them build academic profiles, map out higher education plans, and navigate the college admissions process.
My experience includes coaching students through every step of the application process to ensure they submit applications that reflect their best work. With my background in Psychology, I am also able to provide emotional support and counseling to help students manage the stress and uncertainties that often accompany the admissions journey.
I have guided over 280 students through the university and college admissions process, focusing primarily on the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. My students come from various academic backgrounds and have different interests and strengths. I have helped students pursue a wide spectrum of interests from business, engineering, law, to literature, performing arts, and film studies.
The Lumosis Approach
Goal-Oriented Foundational Work
University admissions is a long-term process. I work closely with students, beginning in Grades 9-11, to build up the experiences, skills, and accomplishments needed to create an outstanding application profile. Using proprietary tools and frameworks I designed and tweaked over the years, I help students evaluate their strengths, devise a strategy and timeline, and create an actionable plan. Through this results-driven process, my students gain tangible achievements leading to an application that truly stands out and significant accomplishments that prepare them and build confidence for the future.
Personalized and Intentional Guidance
Through interactions that emphasize building mutual trust and rapport, I help students mine their life experiences for the hidden gems that make for a unique application. Each of my student is given the close attention and time they deserve as I provide them with the best-fitting guidance and support to throughout the admissions process, freeing them to engage in the real work of discovering themselves.
In-Depth Knowledge and Expertise
With 10 years of experience and research, I am attuned to the shifting demands and requirements of the admissions process and the academic and cultural characteristics that differentiates top universities. Combining annual school visits, deep research, and relationships with key decision makers, I have first-hand knowledge of top North American and UK universities and what they look for in prospective students. This knowledge has helped me find the right school fit for my students, build their profile with confidence, and give them the best chance at success in higher education.
A Holistic and Collaborative Approach
I take on a holistic and collaborative approach in guiding my students by providing step-by-step guidance that helps them reach their goals and accomplishments, all while helping them develop confidence, sense of responsibility, and ownership of their progress.
Typically, I brainstorm with the student (and parents) on ways that they can use their interests and activities to pursue a Signature Project to help them stand out in their applications. Then, I provide guidance and coaching every step of the way to help with the completion and success. The end result is an achievement that they are proud of and an experience that helps them develop critical skills while making them stand out in the application process.
Through the use of regular Parent Reports and close communications, parents are kept up-to-date with the development of their child and progress in the college application timeline.
